Curriculum vitae

Colin Walsh

Computer science student · University of Limerick

Introduction

I’m a computer science student at the University of Limerick with a deep interest in technology. I’m motivated, self-reliant, and enjoy learning through programming, practical projects, and managing my own servers.

Working in teams during my studies has helped me develop my communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. I’m always looking for new challenges and opportunities to learn.

Hobbies
Playing music · Programming · Homelabbing

Work experience

Full stack developer · WP Engine

Contributed primarily to frontend development with React, helping build and maintain user interfaces and working with RESTful APIs. Also contributed to backend development within a multilayer architecture, gaining experience with the separation of responsibilities across application layers.

Helped develop and maintain a PDF generator for reporting services. Migrated internal team tools to a dedicated repository; these tools remain in active use by the team.

Worked in a fully remote team, developing my communication and collaboration skills alongside practical experience in frontend and backend development, software maintenance, and shared tooling.

Education

BSc in Computer Science · University of Limerick

Fourth-year Computer Science student with current studies in Neural Computing and Applied Systems Design. My interests span artificial intelligence, software development, and the design and operation of computer systems.

My degree has included collaborative software projects, a semester abroad in Sweden, and an eight-month development placement with WP Engine. These experiences have helped me build practical development skills and confidence working with others in academic and professional settings.

Alongside my coursework, I pursue independent projects including a timetable-scanning application using computer vision and local AI, and a Debian homelab. These give me hands-on experience building software, integrating tools, and maintaining services over time.

Erasmus exchange · University of Skövde, Sweden

Completed a semester abroad, strengthening my software engineering knowledge through group projects with Swedish students while developing independence, adaptability, and confidence in an international environment.

Selected projects

Schedule Scanner

A desktop application that converts timetable screenshots into importable iCalendar (.ics) files. Uses OpenCV to detect timetable structure and a local Ollama vision model to read class and teaching-week information, with an editable review before export.

Validates timetable data and generates recurring events for the correct teaching weeks. All screenshot processing runs locally, without an API key or calendar-account access. View Schedule Scanner on GitHub.

Self-hosted homelab

Built and maintain a Debian homelab running Docker services for media management, monitoring, Home Assistant, VPN routing, and remote access.

Configured pooled storage with mergerfs, secure remote access through Tailscale, and NVIDIA GPU support for media transcoding. Monitor services using Prometheus, Grafana, and Uptime Kuma.
